About

Nine soil testing videos have been created as part of a joint initiative by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) Geotechnical Division (GD) and the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, People's Republic of China. The purpose of these videos is to educate and train our target audience, which includes students, graduates, and professionals in civil and geotechnical engineering.

The soil tests featured in the videos adhere to the standard methods described in GEOSPEC 3: Model Specification for Soil Testing, published by the GEO (downloadable at this link: https://www.cedd.gov.hk/eng/publications/geo/geo-geospec/geo-s3/index.html). The videos also effectively cover brief interpretation and applications of the test results. Topics include routine tests for soil classification, compaction, consolidation, and shear strength.

By understanding the content, engineers will be better equipped to specify and interpret soil tests properly for engineering purposes. The benefits of these videos will extend to students, graduates, and the profession for many years.

A joint Task Force (TF) between HKIE GD and GEO was set up to take forward this meaningful project. The TF was chaired by HKIE GD Chairman (Session 2023/2024) Dr Gavin Toh with TF members Victon Wong together with Professor Philip Chung and Professor Richard Pang who have been instrumental in developing the project and contributed to the technical contents of the videos. Dr Raymond Cheung, Head of the GEO, deploying GEO colleagues – Roy Hung, Florence Ko, Regis Chee and Yumi Chu (who were also TF members) – and the resources of the Public Works Laboratories (PWL) to help in the making of the videos. A group of enthusiastic young engineers in Hong Kong was recruited to assist in the preparation work and production of the videos with some of them serving as narrators. Their details can be found in the videos.
